Random stuff I stumble upon and for one reason or another find myself reblogging. Also, the sporadic inconsequential nonsense that is me.

More than 100 pilot whales die on New Zealand beach-Rescuers are racing against the clock to refloat about 90 stranded pilot whales after more than 100 died on a beach on New Zealand’s South Island. The rescuers and volunteers at Farewell Spit, Golden Bay, managed to shepherd many mammals into deeper water, only for them to again run aground. Conservation officials believe they have one last chance to refloat the whales on the high tide. If that fails, the mammals may have to be put down. The rescuers are now trying to keep the distressed whales comfortable by pouring water over them. Those mammals who died are believed to have suffered great physical and emotional trauma. Local conservation ranger Mike Ogle said it is the biggest beaching incident in 10-15 years. “Because there’s just so many whales, there are a couple of spots where a lot would gather together and that’s kind of problematic from the aspect that you can’t get in there, it’s just too dangerous,” he said. Farewell Spit has been the location of many whale beachings. Experts say its shallow waters seems to confuse whales and hinder their ability to navigate.

‘Obesity genes’ help determine size and shape,

studies find Many of 97 ‘weight gene’ variants identified work by changing brain’s regulation of appetite, according to research published in Nature -More than a fifth of the weight differences between people can be explained by common “obesity genes”, according to research that confirms some people are naturally at greater risk of becoming overweight. The study, involving more than 300,000 people, highlights 97 gene variants that have a particularly powerful influence on weight, many of which appear to work by changing the way appetite is regulated in the brain, rather than altering basic metabolism. Elizabeth Speliotes, a genetic epidemiologist at the University of Michigan and senior author, said: “Looking at obesity, we didn’t necessarily expect to see genes that work in the brain. In retrospect it’s not that surprising that appetite and feeding pathways have a big role.” Prof Alistair Hall, a cardiologist at Leeds University, said the paper added to a growing recognition that, for some people, eating in moderation is genuinely more challenging, in the same way that some people find it more difficult to give up smoking or drinking. “Some people are potentially more addicted to food,” he said. “They simply find it harder to suppress their appetite.” The findings also reveal the existence of genetic variants that increase a person’s chances of being obese, but simultaneously protect against diabetes and heart disease, adding credibility to the idea that some people can be overweight and healthy.

THIS IS THE BEST COMMERCIAL EVER

I’ve reblogged this so many times because I truly think every parent should involve themselves with what their child enjoys.

Not to mention this is an act of solidarity. He’s saying “even if the entire world is against you, I’m on your side.” Which I think is important for a kid to know. He’s refusing to be a bully to his child, even if he doesn’t understand.

I work at Hot Topic and we had a white suburban dad in who was buying matching heavy metal/screamo band shirts for him and his teenage daughter and said “To be honest, I think this stuff sounds like garbage, but she likes it so we listen to it together and we’re going to the concert for Christmas.” And it was just really heartwarming to see him so involved in his child’s life and validating her interests.

This incredible comic book program, designed by Hipgnosis for Pink Floyd’s 1975 tour supporting The Dark Side of the Moon, is full of wonders. It has an appealing lack of polish that puts it somewhere halfway between “professional promotional item” and “schoolboy’s notebook scribbling.” The bubble letters on page 2, where the credits are, are particularly striking. The “programme” is credited to Hipgnosis, Nick Mason, Gerald Scarfe, Paul Stubbs, Joe Petagno, Colin Elgie, Richard Evans, and Dave Gale. Scarfe, of course, would create the imagery for Floyd’s 1980 album The Wall.

love this

they caused a car crash

No they didn’t. The man driving his car who took his eyes off the road because he was staring at a pair of women caused a car crash. He averted his eyes from the road, he endangered other people and he crashed his own car. This is all the proof you need that we live in a society that blames women for things they didn’t do.
